 Thangalaan: The Son of Gold

Overview: "Thangalaan" is an upcoming Indian Tamil-language period action drama film produced by K. E. Gnanavel Raja  and directed by Pa. Ranjith under Studio Green and Neelam Productions. The film stars Vikram and Pasupathy, alongside Parvathy Thiruvothu, Malavika Mohanan, Daniel Caltagirone, and Harikrishnan Anbudurai in supporting roles.


Announcement and Development: The film was officially announced in December 2021 with the tentative title "Chiyaan 61," marking Vikram's 61st lead role. The final title, "Thangalaan," was unveiled in October 2022. Principal photography began in the same month and concluded in July 2023. G. V. Prakash Kumar composed the music, A. Kishor Kumar handled cinematography, and Selva RK managed the editing.

Release Date: "Thangalaan" is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical release on 26 January 2024, coinciding with Republic Day.

Background: Pa. Ranjith initially discussed the project with Vikram during the making of "Madras" (2014). However, the collaboration was delayed and resurrected in September 2021, with K. E. Gnanavel Raja on board as the producer. The film's historical drama unfolds in the 19th century, focusing on working-class miners discovering gold in the Kolar Gold Fields in Karnataka.

Casting and Title Reveal: On 2 December, Studio Green officially announced the project as "Chiyaan 61." Rashmika Mandanna was initially cast as the female lead but was later replaced by Malavika Mohanan due to schedule conflicts. The film's title, "Thangalaan," was unveiled on 23 October, coinciding with Diwali.

Filming Details: Principal photography commenced in October 2022 in Chennai and later moved to Kadapa and Madurai. Various sequences were shot at Hogenakkal Falls and in the Maldives. The second schedule took place at a film city in Chennai, and the third schedule, lasting nearly six weeks, unfolded in Kolar Gold Fields. English actor Daniel Caltagirone joined the shoot in January 2023. The final schedule, starting in April, covered locations in Madurai and Chennai, concluding on 4 July.

Music: G. V. Prakash Kumar composed the music and background score for "Thangalaan," marking his first collaboration with Pa. Ranjith and his third with Vikram. The audio rights were acquired by Times Music for ₹5 crore (US$630,000). The track "Thangalaan Exclusive Making Theme" was released on 19 April.

Release Plans: "Thangalaan" is set to theatrically release on 26 January 2024, coinciding with Republic Day. The digital streaming rights were acquired by Netflix for ₹35 crore.

Premise: Thangalaan's Valiant Struggle During British Rule

The storyline of Thangalaan unfolds against the backdrop of British rule in India. It intricately weaves the narrative around Thangalaan, a tribal leader, and his courageous fight against the British forces. The plot thickens as the Britishers hatch a scheme to take over the tribal land for gold mining, prompting Thangalaan to rise in defiance and protect his community's heritage.
